The Price of Honor | Part Two

A letter lay crumbled beneath a rock in Langham's Wreck. It is unclear whether it was discarded, lost, or left here intentionally. Regardless, the elements have torn and tattered the letter, but the contents remain clear.
"Mother,
Something happened tonight. Something that is sitting poorly with me as the hours wind on.
A trader passed the checkpoint well after the sun no longer graced me with its rays. He was alone and exhausted, hauling two gyrdstrogs loaded with arcveltian wheat and other produce. With the sounds of violent vermin in the wind, he begged for passage to Langham before the ice set in for the twilight hours.
Captain Everdeen turned him away. I couldn't believe it in the moment.
There is not any rule I know of that the trader trespassed. Captian just… waved him off like turning away bad crops. When I asked, he said the road patrols weren’t our concern tonight. I asked later if we should at least escort the man past the treeline.
The captain told me to mind my watch post, that my distraction could lead to danger for my men.
I cannot stop thinking about the way that man looked back down the road as he left.
