On the edge of town, cast aside by the winds until it met the nook of a tree lays a single page. The script is written with haste.
"Mother,
I have uncovered what the captain is doing.
Those wagons and travelers that pass untouched without much question? They carry silver, salt, and relics taken from the forsaken towns beyond Hullbeck Pike. These smugglers bring them through the watchroad at night under the cover of Mists and Everdeen gladly clears their path.
Anyone who might speak about the coin the captain exchanges, the traders, refugees, hunters, they all get turned at our gate.
We’re not guarding the road.
We’re guarding what comes from beyond the corrupted forest.
There were two guards, friends of mine. Harvek and Alithos complained last week to the captain and were shortly reassigned to a patrol near the deep woods.
They never returned.
The captain says the profane or beasts took them.
But... I’ve walked that route.
They were void of tracks.
